Intercultural Youth Forum 2009

An Intercultural Youth Forum was organized in conjunction with the 5th Sarawak Cultural Symposium by Sarawak Development Institute (SDI) for the Ministry of Social Development and Urbanization Sarawak from 8-10 May 2009 at Pueh Camp, Sematan.The event aims to provide a platform for youth to voice out their opinions, views and ideas on confluence of cultures and unity, to encourage youth to be proactive and actively involved in inter-cultural bonding activities and lastly, to enhance the understanding and appreciation of Sarawak's cultures among the young and future generation.

117 youths aged 17 to 26 years old from Sarawak, Sabah, the Federal Territory of Labuan, West Malaysia as well as international students from Indonesia, Kenya and Nigeria who are currently pursuing their studies in Kuching registered for the event.These youth came from different ethnic backgrounds which includes Iban, Bidayuh, Bisaya, Chinese, Indian, Kenyah, Lun Bawang, Malay and Melanau.

The youth were given paper presentations on Sarawak's Diverse Cultures, Engaging Young People in Inter-cultural Bonding and Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy(SCORE). On the final day, the youth delegates were engaged in group discussion on the topic Towards Greater Inter-cultural Bonding for Better Understanding and Appreciation of Sarawak's Diverse Cultures.
During the three days, other activities organized for the youth includes morning exercise at 6:30am!, cultural traditional games and team building activities such as sumpit, batak lampong, sepak raga ratus, tarik tangan and tating, and a tree planting "Greening the Environment" project in the camp.

Before departing to Kuching, the delegates also visited the Pueh Longhouse which belongs to the Selako Community. They were given a traditional welcome by the longhouse cultural group and briefed on the history of the Selako. They also had the opportunity to visit the 'bilik' and craft corner and participated in activities like pounding of padi.
