KUALA LUMPUR: When Ryan Tan produced the short film Unity, Peace, Tolerance Equals to Friendship promoting the 1Malaysia concept in December 2009, his main intention was to take part in a local film festival.
Even though the film, which promotes inclusiveness in a multiracial society, received the highest number of votes on the Internet, it did not win any award as the event was called off at the last minute.
“My production team and I were really disappointed at that time,” said Tan.

However, the former Kolej Tunku Abdul Rahman student, who has an Advanced Diploma in Broadcasting, did not know that the disappointment would turn out to be a blessing in disguise.
In March last year, Tan read an advertisement on the PLURAL+ 2010 Youth Video Festival, a joint programme of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations and the International Organisation for Migration, and decided to try his luck again by sending in an entry.
Participants from more than 40 countries submitted entries to the festival on a range of topics, including the plight of youth refugees in Austria, the life of Roma girls in Slovenia, migrants’ rights in Ecuador and a child’s vision for a more inclusive India.
Six months later, Tan received an e-mail informing him that his 80-second video had won the Paley Centre for Media Education Award 2010.
“However, due to financial constraints, I could not receive the award in person in New York,” Tan, 25, said.
His friend decided to help Tan get sponsorship from MCA Youth.
“My friend introduced me to MCA Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong, who insisted that I go to New York personally to receive the award on Nov 12 last year.
“Dr Wee even got (travel service specialist) Mayflower to sponsor a return ticket worth RM4,455,” he said at a press conference also attended by Dr Wee.
Tan, who is now doing freelance work, aims to become a successful director like the late Yasmin Ahmad one day.
Dr Wee said Tan deserved the sponsorship as his creativity should be celebrated and appreciated.
“He is a very creative person who has promoted the spirit of unity among various races through his innovative short film,” he said.
