3rd Intercultural Youth Forum 2012

7-8 July 2012, Union Yes Retreat & Training Centre, Lundu

The 3rd Intercultural Youth Forum was jointly organized by Yayasan Perpaduan Sarawak (YPS) and Sarawak Development Institute. This forum was an overnight event whereby all the participants stayed at Union Yes Retreat & Training Centre.

More than 70 youths aged 18 to 25 years old from Sarawak, Sabah, West Malaysia as well as international students from China, India, Mauritius, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nigeria, Sudan, Vietnam who are currently pursuing their studies in Kuching attended the forum. The main objectives of the forum are to provide a platform for youth to voice their opinions, views and ideas on confluence of cultures and unity; to encourage youth to be proactive and actively involved in intercultural bonding activities; and to enhance the understanding and appreciation of Sarawak’s cultures among the young and future generations.
The forum started off with an ice breaking session to get the youths to know each other and divided into groups. The activity consists of group mural painting with the theme Intercultural Unity and Harmony. Other activity was a talent time or cultural performance where groups from UiTM, Segi College, Swinburne, UCSI and Lun Bawang Association and a sole participant performed respectively. The best performance award went to SEGI’s college for the teamwork and rich cultural content in their presentation.

The participants also were asked to discuss in group on strategies/ways to enhance Intercultural Unity and Harmony in Sarawak. Among the ideas from the group presentations were on the setting up of Cultural Theme Park, through early childhood and high school education, celebration of festivals, sports, smart applications, youth programmes and others. The best mural painting was won by the Owl group where their painting depict the need for people to stay connected and united to eliminate negative feelings from destroying the peace and unity that we enjoyed and making the world a better place to live in.
