KUCHING: Chief Minister Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud yesterday called on youths to equip themselves with the right kind of education to blend with the state’s development policy and strategy. He said the development policy and strategy that the state was undertaking was meant to provide job opportunities to the locals, which must be grabbed.

“The picture of our development policy and strategy looks quite good for the growth of our state and Asia, and for that reason our youths must be prepared to equip themselves with right kind of education,” Taib said at the launching of a portal- ouryouth.my – at a leading hotel.

He cited the development of Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) as an example to provide plenty of job opportunities for local people.

The development of SCORE, he said, would first engage foreign workers while the state intensifies its skills development and education programme, adding that foreign workers would eventually be phased out when the state has produced enough professionals and skilled local workers to fill the jobs.

Taib stressed that it was critical for youths to have the right kind of education to bring and make changes and become more relevant to the present and next generations.

“The youths will have a very important role to have humane values to keep social peace, looking after the poor and make sure the handicapped are not left out,” he pointed out.

He went on to say that youths must have enough discipline to face future eventualities and when debating on policies, adding that debating on any policy must be based on reality.
Meanwhile, Taib said the state had been doing well in oil palm, and was now embarking on energy-based industries using hydro dams and coal as the main source.

According to him, the strategy fits the needs of countries like China and Japan, which want to do away with over-reliance on oil.

Among those present were Assistant Minister of Youth Development Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Assistant Minister of Public Utilities Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, organising chairman Dato Patrick Liew and Azam chief executive officer Datu Aloysius Dris.
